Great art

The CHIO Aachen digital starts Tuesday

Many a bird, would if he could, rub his eyes in amazement at what has happened in the sand at the Soers. Because only from a bird’s eye view can one recognise what the Aachen-based designer and artist, Martin Stockberg, has conjured up in the sand in front of the Deutsche Bank Stadium at the CHIO Aachen grounds.

The logo of the CHIO Aachen, the characteristic horse’s head is 35 x 35 metres in size. Indeed, the entire piece of art measures 70 x 70 metres. It is impossible to capture this entire piece of work from the ground, one can’t see the image for the sand. A garden rake and two fine rakes sufficed to create the most flamboyant announcement of the CHIO Aachen digital possible (September 4th-9th). “A small team, big result” grinned Martin Stockberg, who received support with the campaign from the riders, Lisa Prummenbaum from Kesternich and Alexandra Franzen from Düsseldorf.

Stockberg is currently in Bretagne on holiday. Whereby it isn’t a holiday in the classic sense of the word, he is namely also scratching a large-format design into the sand there too, before the tide erases his piece of art all but a few hours later. Transience is an essential element of his art, as Stockberg pointed out. The piece of art at the Soers will also be a thing of the past after two or three downpours. He makes a sketch of the motifs beforehand, measures a few of the key points and does the rest from memory. “It is a question of rhythm and concentration,” Stockberg reported. And then it is almost like meditation, when one namely follows certain patterns that are only in one’s head for half an hour or even much longer. The thoughts going round Lisa Prummenbaum’s head while working with the rake were anything, but esoteric: “If my mum sees me doing this, she’ll be getting me in the garden.”

Martin Stockberg’s piece of art announces the “CHIO Aachen digital”. From August 4th-9th, there is going to be a daily report at 7 p.m. on the CHIO Aachen. The report can be viewed free of charge via www.chioaachen.de, the Facebook and YouTube channels of the CHIO Aachen as well as via www.clipmyhorse.tv. The report is being accompanied by re-live formats of the CHIO Aachen 2019. For all further information see www.chioaachen.de.
