The Challenges

The Dressage, Jumping and Vaulting Challenges

Today, the Sport Challenges are also getting underway at the CHIO Aachen digital. The rules are pretty simple: Everyone does the same at home and also judges the performances of his fellow competitors.

The athletes

Interesting combinations come together here. For example, in the dressage the top two in the world ranking list – Isabell Werth and Jessica von Bredow-Werndl are taking part. They compete against Steffen Peters from the USA, Fabienne Müller-Lütkemeier as well as the scholarship holder of the Deutsche Bank Equestrian Sport Academy, Raphael Netz (Instagram). An exciting detail: Raphael is taking on his boss, he namely works for Jessica in Aubenhausen as a professional rider.

The competition in the jumping is as equally high-calibre: In the Style Jumping Challenge “Mr. Show Jumping” Ludger Beerbaum competes against Luciana Diniz, Janne-Friederike Meyer-Zimmermann and Maurice Tebbel (Instagram). Furthermore, the eventing star Sandra Auffarth is challenging the jumping specialists.

With the European Champion Katharina Luschin from Austria, the World and European Champion Lambert Leclezio (Instagram) from France and Germany’s top athletes Janika Derks, Thommy Brüsewitz and Jannik Heiland, the absolute world elite is also taking part in the Vaulting Challenge.

The tasks

The dressage riders have to ride a test at Grand Prix level – including a surprise effect on the final centre line. The test was pre-defined and was ridden on each of the respective competitor’s home arenas. The showjumpers had to complete a style class over a course designed by Frank Rothenberger. Finally, the vaulters were allowed to select a piece of music and choreograph a one-minute Freestyle to it.

The videos of the performances were subsequently sent to the fellow competitors, who analysed them and awarded a score. As it happens it proved to be not that easy to slip into the role of the judge. In all three disciplines, the votes of the spectators count as the fifth score – via the Judging App (download Play Store / download App Store).
