The eventers and their horses have to accomplish their first competition in the 20 x 60 metre sand dressage arena in the Deutsche Bank Stadium. Three judges, the so-called „Ground Jury“, mark the movements that have to be completed, from different positions around the arena (C, H and B). A maximum of 10 points can be awarded for each of the movements, which differ from each other in their complexity - among others the obedience of the horse, the precision, the movements of the horse as well as the rider‘s seat and correctness of aids are evaluated.
After the dressage competition, the eventing riders have to absolve their jumping test in the afternoon the Main Stadium, and on Saturday morning, the cross-country phase will bring the eventing discipline to a spectacular close.

On Friday afternoon, the eventing riders enter the Main Stadium with its capacity of 40,000 spectators. A course of 450 to 550 metres and 11 to 12 obstacles with the maximum height of 1.25 metres has to be absolved in the jumping competition.
Previous to the jumping competition, the eventing riders have already absolved their dressage test in the Deutsche Bank Stadium on Friday morning, and on Saturday morning, the cross-country phase will bring the eventing discipline to a spectacular close.

Traditionally actually held as the second of the three competitions, in Aachen the cross-country phase -in the modern CIC format- will bring the eventing discipline to a spectacular close, after dressage and jumping on Friday. The cross-country track, built by Rüdiger Schwarz, is 4,000 metres long and leads through the meadows of the Aachen Soers, directly next to the CHIO show grounds - so the spectators can easily reach it on foot. The competition’s start takes place in the Soers meadows, the finishing line is located inside the CHIO’s Main Stadium.
The ticket "Vielseitigkeit - Geländeprüfung Soers"contains access to the cross-country course incl. access to the Main Stadium standing area until the end of the cross-country competition. Access to the CHIO-Village is possible until 6 p.m. area and to the CHIO-Village until the end of the Cross-Country competition)

- In the case of equality of penalties after the normal round a jump-off is decisive, the rider with the least number of penalty points and the fastest time in the jump-off wins
- Obstacle height up to 1.45 m, 8 year-old horses will jump a course raised by approx. 5 cm
- The point-best rider of the three competitions S 5, S 9 and S 11 wins a foal with best pedigree as a special prize given by Sparkasse

- The competition consists of 3 phases:
- Phase A: ca. 7.500 meters, pace free, warm-up passage, average speed 15 km/h
- Phase D: ca. 1.000 meters, pace walk, walk passage, average speed 7 km/h
- Phase E: ca. 9.000 meters, pace free, obstacle passage, average speed 14 km/h - In Phase E, eight obstacles are to be absolved; the time that is needed to pass the single obstacles is decisive, time is stopped upon entering and leaving the obstacle

- The course consists of obstacles with increasing levels of difficulty; a certain number of points is (ascendingly) allocated to each obstacle. If the rider jumps an obstacle without a fault, he gains the obstacle’s points, if he makes a fault, he does not gain the obstacle’s points. The final obstacle has two alternative ways, the more difficult one is the “Joker”, which is allocated a very high number of points. If the rider chooses the alternative “Joker” and does not make a jumping fault, he gains the points, if he makes a fault at the “Joker” obstacle, these points will be deducted from his total score. The rider with the highest total score and the fastest time wins
