Boyd Exell wins the Prize of Family Richard Talbot
The Dutch win the Driving Nations Cup, Ijsbrand Chardon wins the Wohnwelt Pallen Marathon

After the three classification competitions the Australian driver, Boyd Exell, won the overall classification in the Prize of Family Richard Talbot with a score of 142.90 points. For the first time the Marathon competition at the CHIO Aachen 2010, World Equestrian Festival, was held as the last of the three competitions. “This is great for the spectators and thus important for our sport. But one does notice a different, because yesterday my horses were very fresh in the obstacle driving test. Of course after the marathon they are a bit tired,“ commented Boyd Exell, who has been living in Great Britain since 1993. Second place went to the Dutch rider, Ijsbrand Chardon, (149.19), ahead of Christian Sandmann (Germany/154.34). “Aachen was my first show this year, because I had to have an operation on my knee four weeks ago, together with my son, who injured his knee playing football. Since I have had problems with my meniscus for ages, we both went to the doctors and decided that we would have our knees operated on,“ reported Sandmann. Driving is only a hobby for the proprietor of a freight forwarding company in Lähden (Germany). “Which is why I don’t know if I want to go to Kentucky or not. If I do, then only with a top team, so I am going to wait and see what happens at the next shows, because of course travelling to Kentucky entails an enormous amount of time and money.“ Sandmann was nominated for Aachen without having to qualify. “Of course this triggered off discussions and I would like to thank our national coach for placing such trust in me. I think I have confirmed his decision with my performance.“

The team from the Netherlands, comprising of Chardon, Koos de Ronde and Theo Timmermann, won the team classification on a total score of 305.89 points. Germany claimed second place with Michael Brauchle, Rainer Duen and Christoph Sandmann (316. 65). The Swiss team with Felix Affrini, Daniel Wurgler and Werner Ulrich ranked third (329.72).

The Dutch driver, Ijsbrand Chardon, drove to victory in the Wohnwelt Pallen Marathon with 101.70 points. “It was a great Marathon comprising of different elements. The first obstacle was particularly difficult, it would perhaps have been better if there had been a more inviting obstacle at the start,“ the three-time World Champion commented. “Actually it hasn’t been my week this week, my exceptional dressage horse didn’t pass the vet check. Luckily, I was able to make up for everything in the Marathon,“ the 49-year-old explained.
