The pole of the joker didn’t fall and the time was right
The Irish rider Billy Twomey wins the LANXESS arena Prize
It is 11.05 pm and Ludger Beerbaum is still wide awake. The 46-year-old was the last but one competitor to enter the ring in the LANXESS arena Prize, an accumulator jumping competition with joker. He jumped clear with the 11-year-old Dutch-bred Baloubet du Rouet son, Chaman, and jumped the joker obstacle perfectly, finishing on a total score of 65 points, however he took 57.10 seconds to finish the course. The Irish rider, Billy Twomey, also scored 65 points, but managed to reach the finish line 0,88 seconds faster with the 10-year-old Quickstar son, Tackeray, which meant he was the winner of the last jumping competition on Saturday evening. The Swiss rider Pius Schwizer came third on the 8-year-old KWPN gelding, Verdi II. Schwizer had previously won the “Prize of the AachenMünchener” with Ulysee earlier in the afternoon.
An accumulator jumping competition with joker – this is a different competition format to a penalty/time competition. The riders are ranked according to the number of bonus points they are awarded and the time taken. For example one collects one point at fence no. 1, two points at fence no. 2, etc. Double points are awarded for the last obstacle, the joker. Bonus points are only awarded for those fences which are jumped clear. However, if the rider knocks the joker fence down, the points are deducted from his score so far.
