A pair of ears for the CHIO Aachen
Kathrin Böhm wins the World Equestrian Festival 2010 poster competition – design convinces jury and readers

The horse’s ears are pricked, the sky is blue and endless. Kathrin Böhm was able to convince with an exceptional design. The 22 year-old student of the Design Faculty of the University of Applied Sciences Aachen, is responsible for the poster for the World Equestrian Festival, CHIO Aachen 2010.

The pricked ears convey the attentiveness and excitement in the run-up to the show. Everyone, including the horses, is full of pleasant anticipation prior to the big event. “The slogan `Pssst!´ is intended to communicate the tingling atmosphere, which fills the stadium,” explained Kathrin Böhm. The Show Director, Frank Kemperman, is delighted about a further big advantage of the poster: “It symbolises all five CHIO Aachen disciplines.” Kemperman went on to explain that the focus often lies on show-jumping on the posters, whereas Kathrin Böhm’s motif applies equally to dressage riding, eventing, driving and vaulting. The equestrian event runs from July 9th-18th.

The poster was selected in the scope of a project of the University of Applied Sciences Aachen for the second time. An expert jury selected 5 motifs from the a total of 20 poster designs submitted, then the readers of the Aachener Nachrichten and Aachener Zeitung newspapers, elected the winning design. Just under 1,600 votes were counted, Kathrin Böhm’s motif received almost precisely one quarter of the votes. “The fact that the results for all five posters were relatively close is an impressive demonstration of the quality and creativity of the young design students. “Psst!” was the winner. Now, we are not only going to hear it every day and during almost every round at the CHIO, we will also be able to see it for weeks!” stated Bernd Mathieu, Chief Editor of the two daily newspapers.

"An emotional address is achieved through the combination of the text and image statement, which illustrates the fascinating moment of extreme tension for the horse, rider and spectator in an impressively simple manner. This increases the suspense until the moment when the CHIO finally starts," commented the chairman of the jury, Prof. Scheller of the University of Applied Sciences Aachen. The motifs were designed in his seminar at the Design Faculty.

The poster will now be printed together with the official CHIO Aachen poster and distributed throughout the region. Furthermore, it is a component of the Citylight Campaign, which involves the execution of advertising measures for instance at bus stops. It will also be used as an advertisement motif.
