Prize of the City of Aachen 2010 for Willibert Mehlkopf

This year, the former show jumper Willibert Mehlkopf will receive an award for his efforts for Aachen's horse show. This was decided by the Main Committee of the Board of the City of Aachen on January 20th. In 1995, the Main Committee had decided to present an annual award together with the Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein on the occasion of the CHIO Aachen. This award should be given to persons or organisations for their extraordinary efforts to support the World Equestrian Festival, CHIO Aachen. The City's trophy has the form of a horse sculpture.
Mehlkopf receives the award for his outstanding commitment with regards to the advancement of young show jumping riders in Aachen. He founded the annual horse show for young riders and juniors, the "Salut-Festival", which he named after his former top horse. The "Salut-Festival" took place for the first time in 1991. Several times, Mehlkopf took part in the World Equestrian Festival, CHIO Aachen. With his puissance horse "Wabbs", he set a new Aachen high jump record in 1985 when je jumped a wall of 2.31 metres, this record has not been broken until today. Furthermore, the native Aachener has competed in several Nations' Cups and carried the German colours worldwide.
